“The 5000 Fingers of Dr.T. make music which pumps and squelches like meat in a grinder”

Their recipe for making music starts with matching ASR-10′s fed through a chain of resonant and envelope filters run by their home made controllers. This is then poured over a thick buzzing bassline before being served up with a side dish of electro beats. They rarely use sampled loops, instead preferring to create beats from scratch. This is done by Jasper with Adam bringing the ‘musical’ element to tracks.

Formed in 1994, 5000 Fingers of Dr T became a regular fixture in the Sydney underground techno scene. Their musical development has taken them from their roots in funky, acidic techno through to ambient and weird excursions, and then to a fresh up front dance sound which is pure vibe. Adam and Jasper both have a lengthy history in the electronic arts and computing industry with Adam being one of Australia’s first video game software designers while still only in High School.

Actual Russian Brides are vocalist Lull (Elena Knox) and media jockey partner Baby Swindle (Lindsay Webb). Eschewing the laptop, they deliver a sexy, savvy electronic pop with analogue synths, machines, knives, toys and capriciously crafted lyrics. Their debut album, Miss Sled, is out October 2010 on Brigade Music.

Conceived during a collaboration for Clan Analogue’s forthcoming Severed Heads tribute, Actual Russian Brides were born quivering into the Berlin winter of 2009, and are getting exponentially hotter. Look out for them on the new compilation from New Weird Australia, touring Germany with Manekinekod in October/November 2010, or launching Miss Sled in Sydney and Melbourne in December.

Aeriae is Sydney-based electronic composer/producer Wade Clarke. His grandfather was an engineer and almost-concert pianist, and Wade grew up playing the piano by ear. Prominent in his childhood repertoire were creaky renditions of his favourite 70s and 80s electronic film scores, such as Escape From New York, Halloween and TRON.

After high school, Wade studied Communications at the University Of Technology, Sydney, then variously worked on short films, on his own writing and reviews and also as a webcomic artist (Ocular Trauma) before reconnecting with contemporary, purely electronic music via Aphex Twin’s phenomenal Druqks album. Work on a series of videogame soundtrack remixes led forward to the development of original material as Aeriae.

Anticipating the electro tsunami of the last decade, B(if)tek were amongst the original “Geek Girls”, making cutting edge dancefloor tunes with their vast collection of sound-generating machines and immaculate wardrobes.

Since the release of their acclaimed album Frequencies Will Move Together in 2003, B(if)tek’s Nicole Skeltys and Kate Crawford have each been busy with their own projects. Nicole Skeltys has been residing in the USA as an artist-in-residence with Pittsburgh Filmmakers, recently releasing the album Larceny of Love with her new psychedelic electronic act The Jilted Brides. Kate works in academia and produces minimal electronica with Clone. She wrote the book ‘Adult Themes’ and hosted the ABC TV experimental music series ‘Set’.

Once upon a time, a young man called Edward was walking along and he came across a synthesiser.

“My, what a curious device” he thought to himself, as he absent-mindedly pressed the keys.
“BOWWWWWWWWWMP!” went the synthesiser.
Edward was so pleased with that sound that he decided from then on, he would dedicate his spare time to meeting as many synthesisers as he could. wonderful creatures that they are.
A little while later, Edward met Julian, and they got to talking about music.
Julian wasn’t really into synthesisers, thinking that they were very limited and made bad sound-alike noises. He much preferred to (badly) play the guitar, because he had direct control over the strings as they vibrated.
“AHA!” said Edward, well I have some synthesisers you should meet. And took Julian back to his studio, where he showed Julian what an analogue synth with lots of sliders, instead of a few buttons and an LCD menu let you do.
Julian was also so pleased with the sounds and control that he decided he would also dedicate his spare time to meeting as many synthesisers as he could, wonderful creatures that they are, and help them say what they want to say.
And Edward, Julian, and the synthesisers all lived happily ever after.

This may not be terribly amazing if it was just a cut and paste jobbie or a knob twiddler’s delight, but this is a live project with no less than 17 people working on the tracks and contributing an amazing array of skills on tuned percussion, drums, electric guitar, classical chinese harp (zheng), violin, flugal horn, concert harp, upright bass, timpani, turntables and synthesisers.

The compositions are rich and wonderfully cinematic in style, amazing considering the d.i.y. electronic recording mentality that has brought the entire project together.

City Frequencies is a partnership between two Melbourne artists (Nick Wilson and Matt Adair) that explores the urban environment as a source of music and sound. Initiated for the 2000 Next Wave Festival, a day in the life of the audible CBD (or city) was recorded and mapped out with a four speaker sound system set up in the lower Melbourne Town Hall.

Following on from that success, we decided to narrow the scope of the environment and chose the inner city cafe as a suitably interesting location to record the conversations of Melburnites. This project ran over several years from 2003 under the name of Cafe Voyeur.

Most recently our latest project worked under the name of Random Acts of Elevator Music and changed our involvement in the city environment to one of active participant.
