Severed Heads are one of the pioneers of electronic music in Australia. With their infectious dark robotic rhythms and quirky lyrics, they broke electronic music firstly in the Australian underground during the post-punk era then the mainstream during the 1980s. Having produced work spanning experimental and industrial sound art through to techno, electro and synth-pop, Severed Heads provided unique inspiration to a generation of Australian electronic artists and made a huge impact overseas. In 2011 they impressed a new generation of fans when they reformed to tour supporting Gary Numan.

Clan Analogue members acknowledge the influence Severed Heads has had on them and their music. The collective formed in 1992 drawing inspiration from the example of Severed Heads, pushing boundaries in the use of new and obsolete technology in music, sound and visuals and to explore avenues for multimedia distribution outside of the mainstream. Once word spread that Clan Analogue were compiling Headspace, artists from as far away as London and Tokyo put their hands up to contribute. The album includes tracks from long-running Clan Analogue acts such as Telemetry Orchestra and Kazumichi Grime, current stalwarts such as Lunar Module, Telafonica and Winduptoys, along with new emerging artists like Aeriae, Actual Russian Brides and Philosophy of Sound. International guests Scanner and Little Nobody also demanded to be included once they heard the news.

As befitting a collective of technologically-inspired, forward-looking sound artists, the traditional notion of a cover version for Headspace was deconstructed and reinvented. Rehashing chord progressions and vocal melodies was not often the best method to rework abstract sound pieces and industrial electro masterpieces. Artists needed to distil the essence of their chosen track and rebuild with a new sonic palette for the decade. Approaches included cut-up collages using the original recordings as source material or using the original tracks as inspiration for further explorations into sound.

In the meantime, to launch the festivities Clan Analogue has retrieved from the archives two releases initially compiled in 2002 to mark the collective’s tenth anniversary – the Clan Recordable compilations.

Clan Recordable was originally released as a free promotional compilation commemorating the 2002 tenth anniversary of Clan Analogue, compiled by 2SER’s Jonathan Sykes. The tracks were available for a limited period for download from the Clan Analogue website with the CD artwork also downloadable for printing so that fans could burn their own CD copies.
Clan Recordable features styles ranging from trip hop to minimal techno to breakbeat, forming a snapshot of Australian electronic artists active in the early part of the decade. Hear Deepchild collaborating with FourPlay and many other highlights from artists such as Nerve Agent, Zog and Null Object.

Clan Recordable was so popular on its first release that it was quickly followed by Clan Recordable 2, collecting together exclusive tracks by artists such as Disco Stu, Audio Cephlon and Telafonica in another diverse and upbeat collection.

The cassette releases come from an era when Clan Analogue released the first recordings by acts who later established international reputations in techno and electronic music, such as B(if)tek, Infusion, Terra 9 and Dark Network.

Schizmatrix – various artists (catalogue number CAC01)
One of the rarest releases in Australian electronic music, Schizmatrix launched the Studio Series of Clan Analogue cassettes. With classic early tracks by Infusion, B(if)tek, Dark Network and others, it is of immense interest to any aficionado of this musical era.

Clan Analogue Melbourne – various artists (catalogue number CA006E)
Capturing perfectly the 7am vibe at 90s Victorian forest raves such as Earthcore and Technofest, Clan Analogue Melbourne collects ambient electronic sounds and subtle grooves from artists such as Moo, Seo and The Spartacus Barraworn. This release launched the Melbourne branch of the Clan Analogue collective.

Music For Aliens – Holy Terra and Nanotech (catalogue number CA009)
Containing a side each by Sydney acts Holy Terra and Nanotech, Music For Aliens explores sounds from techno and trance through to chilled downbeat ambience. Holy Terra later metamorphosed into the internationally-acclaimed Terra 9 while Nanotech’s Ant Banister went on to form acts such as Eidolon, The Flow, Galactic Gangstars and Lunar Module.

‘Wayfaring Stranger’ is the second single from Valley Forge’s debut album Artificial Heart. The Wayfaring Stranger EP includes a remix by Itch-E & Scratch-E’s Andy Rantzen and follows the release of Follow Suit which featured remixes by iconic dance acts Boxcar and Single Gun Theory.

Nicole Skeltys, musician and sound artist, known for her work with B(if)tek, Artificial, Dust, Jilted Brides and more, has been traveling and working on music projects in the US. She met with Michelle Moog-Koussa to discuss the legacy of Bob Moog, his influence on Clan Analogue and to officially hand over a copy of Clan Analogue’s retrospective compilation Re Cognition: The Clan Analogue Legacy Collection for the Bob Moog Foundation’s collection.

The two had much to discuss regarding Clan Analogue and the Bob Moog Foundation’s shared passion for sound synthesis and technological development in electronic music. Clan Analogue are now investigating ways of sending a delegation of its artists to perform in the US for the next Moogfest.

Lunar Module remixed Nerve Agent on the recent compilation Re Cognition: The Clan Analogue Legacy Collection. Their previous Maxxi Single Get Low, featuring several remixes by Sydney electronica extraordinaires Telafonica and Bleepin’ J Squawkins, sent pulsating synth-bass throbbing through the airwaves.

Now they return for their new self-titled EP containing a critical mass of seven new tracks bound for escape velocity, including the epoch-defining single ‘I Want To Be On TV’.

Relocating to Melbourne they were joined by Nick Fakeman, the notorious twin-handed keyboard demon of Clifton Hill, and Canadian renegade entrepreneur Ganz Enfarben. Producer extraordinaire Simon Grounds stepped in to help turn the chaos into a record.

Theme From Tiatto is the first taster. Teutonic slabs of analogue synthesizer, random breakbeats, funky distorted clavinet stabs, ambient drones and earsplitting guitar noises from special guest Penny Ikinger – what more could a music fan want? How about Andy Rantzen, who needed some practise to warm up his dance music production chops before getting stuck into work on the new Itch-E & Scratch-E album.
