To mark its twentieth anniversary, Clan Analogue are proud to release the new compilation album Headspace uniquely celebrating the heritage of this Australian electronic music and arts collective. Headspace is a tribute album to the legendary Severed Heads, with Clan Analogue’s artists reinterpreting their favourite tracks from this seminal Australian electronic music act.

Severed Heads are one of the pioneers of electronic music in Australia. With their infectious dark robotic rhythms and quirky lyrics, they broke electronic music firstly in the Australian underground during the post-punk era then the mainstream during the 1980s. Having produced work spanning experimental and industrial sound art through to techno, electro and synth-pop, Severed Heads provided unique inspiration to a generation of Australian electronic artists and made a huge impact overseas. In 2011 they impressed a new generation of fans when they reformed to tour supporting Gary Numan.

Clan Analogue members acknowledge the influence Severed Heads has had on them and their music. The collective formed in 1992 drawing inspiration from the example of Severed Heads, pushing boundaries in the use of new and obsolete technology in music, sound and visuals and to explore avenues for multimedia distribution outside of the mainstream. Once word spread that Clan Analogue were compiling Headspace, artists from as far away as London and Tokyo put their hands up to contribute. The album includes tracks from long-running Clan Analogue acts such as Telemetry Orchestra and Kazumichi Grime, current stalwarts such as Lunar Module, Telafonica and Winduptoys, along with new emerging artists like Aeriae, Actual Russian Brides and Philosophy of Sound. International guests Scanner and Little Nobody also demanded to be included once they heard the news.

As befitting a collective of technologically-inspired, forward-looking sound artists, the traditional notion of a cover version for Headspace was deconstructed and reinvented. Rehashing chord progressions and vocal melodies was not often the best method to rework abstract sound pieces and industrial electro masterpieces. Artists needed to distil the essence of their chosen track and rebuild with a new sonic palette for the decade. Approaches included cut-up collages using the original recordings as source material or using the original tracks as inspiration for further explorations into sound.

Headspace is available in classic CD jewel-case format, as well as in non-physical formats, through MGM Distribution.

The legendary Kamahl teams up with Sydney producer of cinematic electronica Valley Forge for a haunting down-tempo updating of the 18th century spiritual ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ on the newest release from Clan Analogue. In perhaps his most personal musical statement yet, Kamahl is the ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, journeying through cyberspace on an endless search for refuge from existential isolation. Valley Forge and Kamahl channel Tron and Scot Walker in equal measure, exploring the quest for human connection within our modern technological dystopia.

Following on from the recently-released Wayfaring Stranger EP Artificial Heart is one of the most impeccably-crafted albums to be released in the modern Australian electronic music ecosystem. The debut album from Valley Forge is a true synthesis of the organic and synthetic, a new form of transhumanist electronica.

Spanning rich, cinematic synthscapes to intimate and melancholic techno-pop, Artificial Heart is a modified microarray of electro, dub, ambient and world music elements. With influences such as Tangerine Dream, Giorgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, Boards of Canada, Wendy Carlos, BT and Air gene-spliced with sounds from gamelan to gospel, Artificial Heart transforms these nanosonics into a new organism of sound.

Valley Forge was formed by biosonic engineer Freeman Lowell, joining with a selection of notable collaborators on Artificial Heart, including Australian music legend Kamahl, Sydney indie band So I’m Jo’s Glen Cassidy and Japanese experimental music artist Amos Wong. Tracks such as ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, ‘Follow Suit’ and ‘Machine-Built Rhythm’ have preceded the album, with contributions to Clan Analogue compilations Doppler Shift, In Version and Re Cognition anticipating Valley Forge’s first full-length work.

Now Artificial Heart has arrived at its destination – a singularity of pure emotive machinery. Embrace the transformation – implant yours today.

“A trip-hop sci-fi soundtrack, merging sinister technology with spiritual soundscapes… Artificial Heart is an excursion into our own warped, inconsistent world.”

Opening track ‘Follow Suit’ features guest vocals and guitar from Glen Cassidy of Sydney duo So I’m Jo, bringing his lo-fi bedroom electronics sensibility to the studio for this collaboration. ‘Follow Suit’ is also presented with an exclusive new remix by the legendary and reclusive Single Gun Theory, emerging out of a dream for this one ethereal moment.

Bonus double-A-side ‘Machine-Built Rhythm’ bridges the club sounds of the last twenty years with remixes from Clan Analogue nu-disco comrades Koshowko and Sydney’s prodigal synth-pop sons Boxcar, ending their exile from Australian dance music by delivering three globe-trotting monster remixes bounced during production between studios in New York and Sydney.

Valley Forge produce a genetic fusion of cinematic electronic textures and rhythms of machine-like precision. The Valley Forge debut album Artificial Heart will be released on Clan Analogue later this year.

Follow Suit is available on CD from Waterfront, Red Eye, JB Hi-Fi other good music retailers. It is also available in non-physical format from iTunes and other online retailers.

The story of Tiatto begins in a Brixton garret opposite a crackhouse in 2001, with the chance meeting of Ben Wah and Max Devere, who quickly whipped up a couple of albums of material. After leaving their laptop on the tube one night, the project went into hiatus until the Reason files suddenly appeared on a warez board several years later.

Relocating to Melbourne they were joined by Nick Fakeman, the notorious twin-handed keyboard demon of Clifton Hill, and Canadian renegade entrepreneur Ganz Enfarben. Producer extraordinaire Simon Grounds stepped in to help turn the chaos into a record.

Theme From Tiatto is the first taster. Teutonic slabs of analogue synthesizer, random breakbeats, funky distorted clavinet stabs, ambient drones and earsplitting guitar noises from special guest Penny Ikinger – what more could a music fan want? How about Andy Rantzen, who needed some practise to warm up his dance music production chops before getting stuck into work on the new Itch-E & Scratch-E album. Check out his remix, full of reverse polarity groove.

“Elements of more abstract noise rearing their heads amongst the more dance-friendly rhythms, through hypnotically glimmering analogue synth tones, grinding broken machine rhythms and spectral dub drop-outs”

Koshowko is the musical brainchild of Polish-born anarchist philosopher Martin K. After spending time in Berlin and Reykjavik, Martin K arrived in Melbourne to begin a new phase of existence as he set about exploring ‘the Philosophy of Sound’.

The Truth In Me EP explores the transitoriness of existence and the search for meaning by melding the in-the-moment philosophy of dance music with timeless musical values of melody, harmony and structure. The EP opens with epic synths and haunting vocoders on the ‘Down On your Knees’ edit of the title track. Next we hear a new remix of ‘Switched On’, initially produced by Koshowko for the critically acclaimed collaboration with Winduptoys on their 2006 album Double Exposure and now remixed by Philosophy Of Sound with added existentialist dancefloor intensity. ‘Lose What We Have’ touches on the transient aspect of life with a fatalistic funk-hop groove. ‘Promise – Part 3’ update the classic Koshowko dub track with lyrics inspired by Leonard Cohen’s poem ‘Democracy’. ‘The EP closes with a nu-disco mix of ‘The Truth In Me’.

The Truth In Me is one of four new EPs released by Clan Analogue showcasing the work of the collective’s newest artists, along with releases by fellow internationalists Tiatto and Sydney bands Lunar Module and Valley Forge.

For the first time the story of Australian electronic music collective Clan Analogue has been told in the documentary Clan Analogue: Plug In & Switch On, featured on the limited-edition DVD with the new triple-disc set Re Cognition: The Clan Analogue Legacy Collection. The documentary examines the original formation of the Clan Analogue collective in 1992, moving through the late 90s when it gained a reputation as one of Australia’s leading underground electronic music labels and looking at where the collective is today. Clan Analogue: Plug In & Switch On is a timely contribution to a historical perspective on Australian dance and electronic music.

Click here to see a trailer

Plug In & Switch On also explores the appeal of electronic music and issues faced by electronic music artists in Australia. Interviewed are founding members Brendan Palmer and Toby Grime, artists such as B(if)tek and Deepchild, past and present Label Managers Gordon Finlayson and Nick Wilson, and a new generation of artists including Winduptoys, Koshowko and Bleepin’ J Squawkins. Plug In & Switch On also includes excerpts from live gigs and rare archival footage.

Clan Analogue: Plug In & Switch On is available on the limited-edition DVD with the new triple-disc set Re Cognition: The Clan Analogue Legacy Collection
