Wasters of Time

Malcolm Smith has been writing music for almost 40 years. He started creating music with a 2-track reel-to-reel tape deck around 1980, later progressing to a 4-track.

Now he has progressed from magnetic tape to digital recording, coming to grips with this medium over the last 10 years or so. He now mostly works ‘in the box’, using virtual instruments and MIDI piano roll, occasionally sampling vocals, guitar or random recordings of machinery and household appliances.

Malcolm’s current main project has been to create a complete modular synth system that runs directly inside his DAW-of-choice Reaper.

The Wasters of Time’s main musical influences are from the late 70’s through to mid 80’s, including Kraftwerk, Bowie, Eno, Talking Heads, Public Image Limited and Devo.
